From DropSite: the targeting of the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis

24 March 2025

Israeli forces have reportedly struck the second floor of the emergency building at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. California-based Dr. @FerozeSidhwa who is currently volunteering at the hospital has also shared footage from the hospital.

Dr. Perlmutter, a world renowned hand surgeon from North Carolina, was on CNN THIS morning telling the world about Israel’s war crimes and hours later the IDF firebombed the top floor of the hospital where he was working.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health – Gaza: Urgent A short while ago, the occupation forces targeted the surgical building inside the Nasser Medical Complex, which houses many patients and wounded, and a large fire broke out there. Ministry of Health March 23, 2025

Dr. @FerozeSidhwa shared the following video, noting smoke coming out of the window. He says it appears Israel directly bombed the hospital. Dr. Feroze Sidhwa tells Drop Site that an explosion hit either the hospital building or just outside it, and the front of the hospital on fire. He said a patient who was about to be transferred from the ICU to the operating room is now on hold and “almost certainly going to die.”
Another Palestinian journalist captured this footage. He also reports deaths and injuries inside the hospital.

Journalist @abdallahatar is at the site. He reports the surgery department inside Nasser Medical Complex was directly targeted, and there are dead and injured “This is not the first time, nor the second time, that hospitals have been directly targeted. The Israeli occupation forces are directly targeting hospitals. The surgical department inside Nasser Medical Complex was directly targeted, with the wounded, patients, and medical staff all inside of the complex,” he reports. Al-Attar continues, “The fire has been raging in the building for more than half an hour, and Civil Defense has so far been unable to put the fire out.” People can be heard shouting “Bring a stretcher”, and a mother screams “My son” as her child is carried out of the targeted room.

Israeli military admits it bombed Nasser Hospital, claiming it was targeting a member of Hamas—as it always does when laying siege to and attacking hospitals. Israeli reports claim the military assassinated Ismail Barhoum, a senior member of Hamas’s political bureau and Gaza leadership, elected in March 2021. Barhoum reportedly heads Hamas’s Charitable Institutions Association, which manages hundreds of charities that send donations to the group.

Dr Feroze Sidhwa: Attack stopped operations for about an hour and destroyed its male surgical ward. He told Al Jazeera that the 16-year-old who was killed in the attack was one of his patients. “I operated on him. I believe on March 18, I did an abdominal operation. He probably would have gone home tomorrow, but now he’s dead.” “The male surgical ward is destroyed. It does not exist any more. It will have to be completely rebuilt. The whole hospital smells like smoke now,” he added. “The [ward’s] entire electrical system was destroyed. Every door was blown off its hinges. Most of the windows were shattered. The ceiling has collapsed. It’s completely unusable. It’s going to have to be torn out and redone.” Sidhwa noted that the ward is not where surgeries are done, so doctors at Nasser can continue to provide surgical services. But the attack destroyed about 30 beds in the hospital, he said. “And the hospital is already being overwhelmed by casualties. So the fewer beds we have, the less care we are able to provide.”

Palestinian Ministry of Health reports the strike resulted in the death of one patient and injuries to several others, including medical staff. In a statement, the ministry condemned the attack, noting it has caused widespread panic and forced a complete evacuation of the surgery department and significant damage.

Additional footage from inside the hospital as staff and patients try to extinguish the fire. Extensive damage from the strike is visible.

Hamas has issued a statement mourning the death of Ismail Barhoum, a senior member of its political bureau in Gaza, who was killed in the Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis while receiving treatment.

Statement from Hamas:

— In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Obituary “And never think of those who are killed in the cause of God as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.” The Islamic Resistance Movement “Hamas” mourns with God Almighty the great leader and mujahid: Martyr Brother/Ismail Barhoum, Member of the Movement’s Political Bureau in the Gaza Strip who was martyred as a result of a cowardly Zionist assassination crime, which targeted him in a bombing at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, where he was receiving treatment. Targeting Commander Barhoum while he was receiving treatment in a hospital ward is a new crime added to the terrorist occupation’s record of violating sanctities, lives, and healthcare facilities. It reaffirms its disregard for all international norms and conventions, and its continued policy of systematic killing against our people and their leaders. We condemn in the strongest terms the crime of bombing the hospital, which represents a dangerous escalation in Zionist war crimes against our people and a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms. The martyred leader, Ismail Barhoum, was a symbol of Islamic and religious advocacy and a pillar of the movement in the Gaza Strip. He was an example of steadfastness, giving, and selflessness. He spent his life serving his people, his religion, and his cause. He was loyal to Palestine and its holy sites, sincere in his affiliation, and present in the arenas of advocacy and community and humanitarian work. As we, in the Hamas movement, bid farewell to this great leader, we pledge to God and then to our people that the blood of our leaders will remain beacons on the path of resistance and freedom. We pledge that the crimes of the occupation will not deter us from continuing the path of resistance and jihad until liberation and return. We ask God to accept him among the martyrs, to comfort the hearts of his family and loved ones, and to inspire us and them with patience and fortitude.
