Editor Phil Pan claims the story was not “killed” but the details incorporated into a different story. That would be fine, except the story they incorporated it into kept the same, original, inaccurate framing. Pan writes: “You may have seen an article in the online outlet Electronic Intifada criticizing our coverage of the violence in Amsterdam and making the claim that we “killed” a visual investigation into those events. I wanted to let you know this is untrue. In fact, we merged material from that visual reporting effort with our reporting on the ground in Amsterdam into one story. That allowed us to include all of our material in a single, more comprehensive and timely piece with official statements, verified video and accounts from witnesses we interviewed directly. As many of you know, this is not unusual. Some of our most powerful pieces of journalism in recent years have been collaborations with the Visual Investigations team, which regularly produces outstanding work around the world.”
